USA 2015 – Part 3 : Joshua Tree

After (sadly) leaving Yosemite behind in Part 2, it was back to LA for a dinner date with some great people from many different times in my life. There was old high school friends, random internet friends and even friends from back in Brisbane. It was odd, but really nice. I’m just so lucky to have all these people in my life. I love you all!

But the night was early and I was on the road in the morning heading out to the desert for the first time. Because dammit I was making a beeline straight to the place that U2 named their decent album after: Joshua Tree.

Joshua Trees are like like ET hands with bushes on the end. And in this wide open desert, with the hot, dry air surrounding you (a pleasant change from the freezing, flurrying weather of Yosemite), looking at this landscape of sand, boulders and weird-ass shrubs, you could be mistaken for thinking you were on another planet.

After setting up camp, I did what I always did, and climbed a mountain for a beer.

It was surprisingly busy in Joshua Tree. Some middle-aged ladies pulled their car over the side of the road to holler at me at one point, and tried to get me to go back to their place outside Vegas for dinner. But I was a man with a plan and a craving for adventure of the outdoors variety, not the kind that could end with me in a bathtub full of ice missing a kidney or just with a band hangover missing a passport.

Instead I had a beer on top of Ryan Mountain, which for those playing at home is 40 metres taller than Queensland’s tallest mountain.

As the sun set, I explored some ruins behind my campsite.  Farming must have really, really sucked back in the day.

That night I had some incredibly terrible dreams, which ended up with me crawling out of my campervan to vomit. The next morning I found a lot of coyote prints near my van, which made the dreams so much more lifelike.

After hot days and cold nights in the desert, I took the van across hundreds of miles with no gas stations and headed south to Part 4 – Grand Canyon.

There’s a gallery of a few more selected images below, otherwise if you like any of these pictures you can buy a print, canvas (or more!) in my webstore: If the photo you want isn’t in there, let me know!
